Why Do Teddy Bears Bring Comfort?

Anxiety, Stress & Emotional Support

For many of us, a teddy bear is more than just a teddy bear.

It might be the bear a child can’t sleep without. The teddy that travels everywhere with them. The one packed for a first sleepover, a hospital stay or the first day at nursery.

Or it might be a bear that has been kept for decades because of the person, place or memories attached to it.

As an Accredited Registered MBACP therapist with 17 years’ experience and as a mum and founder of Blue Bear & Co. I’ve seen both professionally and personally how powerful familiarity, connection and sensory experiences can be during times of change, anxiety, grief and uncertainty.

But why can something as simple as a teddy bear mean so much?

Why are teddy bears important for children?

Children often form strong attachments to familiar objects such as teddy bears, blankets and soft toys.

A favourite bear can become part of the everyday rhythm of childhood bedtime, travelling, nursery, school, holidays, hospital appointments or simply curling up at home.

When something around a child changes, that familiar object stays the same.

For some children, having their teddy nearby can provide familiarity and reassurance when they’re somewhere new or experiencing emotions they don’t yet have the words to explain.

Teddy bears can also become part of imaginative play. Children might talk to their bear, care for it or use it to play out situations they’ve experienced.

As a therapist, one of the things I talk about regularly is the importance of looking beneath a child’s behaviour.

Children don’t always tell us, “I’m anxious,” “I feel overwhelmed,” or “I need reassurance.”

Sometimes we see it instead.

It might appear as clinginess, anger, difficulty sleeping, withdrawal or behaviour that seems to come from nowhere.

Connection and emotional safety matter and sometimes familiar objects can become part of the ways children seek that reassurance.

Do teddy bears help with anxiety?

A teddy bear isn’t a treatment for anxiety, but familiar comfort objects can feel reassuring when someone is worried, unsettled or experiencing difficult emotions.

For a child, having their favourite teddy with them during an unfamiliar experience can provide a small piece of familiarity.

It could be starting school, sleeping somewhere new, travelling, attending a hospital appointment or navigating a change within their family.

Holding something soft and familiar may also become associated with moments when a child has previously felt safe and settled.

And importantly, that need for familiarity and connection isn’t something that automatically disappears when we grow up.

Why do adults sleep with teddy bears?

There is nothing particularly unusual about an adult keeping or sleeping with a teddy bear.

For some people, it’s simply familiar.

For others, the teddy carries memories of childhood, a particular person or an important time in their life.

The object itself may be ordinary.

The meaning attached to it isn’t.

A teddy might remind someone of a parent or grandparent who gave it to them.

It might represent childhood and home.

Or it might provide a tangible connection to someone they love or miss.

This is one of the reasons possessions can become so precious. Their financial value can be almost irrelevant compared with the emotional value we give them.

Can teddy bears help with stress?

We all have different things that help us feel settled.

It might be music, a familiar smell, photographs, a favourite blanket, a pet or something treasured that we’ve owned for years.

For some people, a teddy bear serves a similar purpose.

Its softness and familiarity can make it comforting to hold during emotional or stressful moments.

Again, a teddy bear shouldn’t be presented as a medical treatment for stress or anxiety.

Instead, think of it as one of the familiar things a person may personally associate with comfort, connection and reassurance.

Sometimes having something familiar to hold can simply help us feel a little less alone in a difficult moment.

Why are scent, sound and touch so powerful?

Sometimes it isn’t the object itself that takes us back to a particular moment.

It’s a smell.

A voice.

A song.

Or the feeling of something familiar.

You can hear someone’s voice and immediately be transported back to a conversation.

A familiar perfume or aftershave can make you think instantly of someone you love.

These sensory connections particularly voice, scent and touch became incredibly important in the development of Blue Bear & Co.

And there is a very personal reason why.

The little blue bear that started everything

My son Charlie had a little light blue teddy bear given to him as a baby by his Nannie Dot.

That bear went everywhere with him.

It was there at home, at bedtime, on days out and later through hospital stays, surgery and recovery.

To anybody else, it was a little blue teddy.

To Charlie, it was familiar. It was his.

And to us, it became part of his story.

After losing Charlie, I understood on an entirely different level how much meaning we can attach to seemingly ordinary things.

His little blue bear eventually inspired the name Blue Bear & Co.

And my experiences as both a therapist and a mum went on to influence what I wanted Blue Bear & Co. to become.

I didn’t simply want to create teddy bears.

I wanted to create something meaningful.

Something that could be there for all life’s moments.

More Than Just a Bear…

That thinking ultimately led to the creation of our Brown Bear.

I wanted to take some of the sensory connections that can mean so much to us and create a bear families could make completely personal to them.

Our Brown Bear can hold a recorded voice, a familiar scent and treasured keepsakes, alongside its gentle heartbeat feature.

A voice saying I love you.

A scent that instantly reminds you of home or someone you love.

A tiny keepsake you never want to lose.

Things that might appear small to somebody else but can mean everything to the person holding them.

The purpose isn’t to replace a person or to suggest that a bear can take away anxiety, grief or difficult emotions.

It can’t.

It’s about creating something tangible that can hold onto special memories and connections, something you can physically hug when words aren’t enough.

For me, that’s what More Than Just a Teddy Bear really means.

Helping children explore their emotions

My work as a therapist also influences the stories I write for children.

My children’s book Finding You explores the idea of discovering strength and courage within ourselves.

Books can create another opportunity for parents and children to talk about emotions, worries and experiences together, particularly when a child might struggle to begin that conversation themselves.

That’s something I want to continue across everything we create at Blue Bear & Co.

Not telling children how they should feel.

But helping create opportunities for comfort, connection and conversation.

A bear can mean something different to everyone

One person may see a teddy bear as simply a toy.

For somebody else, that same bear could represent an entire chapter of their life.

A bear might be there for a new baby.

The first day at nursery.

A difficult night.

A hospital stay.

A new adventure.

Leaving home.

A wedding.

Becoming a parent.

Or remembering someone deeply loved.

Our lives contain moments of enormous happiness and moments we would never have chosen.

And sometimes the simplest things become the things we hold onto most tightly.

That’s why at Blue Bear & Co. we believe in Bears for Life.

Beautiful bears created for comfort, connection and lasting memories, for all life’s moments.

Because sometimes a bear really can become more than just a teddy bear.
