Honouring the Heart of Hospice Care: Why Children’s Hospices Mean Everything to Us
This Children’s Hospice Week, we pause with heavy hearts to honour their incredible, life changing work and to share why they mean everything to us.
Nothing prepares you for the moment you’re told your child is dying.
Our world shattered the day we learned our beautiful son Charlie, just five years old, needed palliative care. In an instant, the future we had imagined disappeared, replaced by fear, heartbreak, and a desperate wish to savour what time we had left.
In that unimaginable moment, Derian House Children’s Hospice became our anchor.
They didn’t just support us they wrapped around us. With compassion, with gentleness, and with a depth of care that reached into the very core of our pain. They gave us something far beyond medical support, they gave us time. Their vital support enabled us to care for Charlie at home, surrounded by his family. It enabled us to lie beside him, hold his hand and make the most of every single second. It gave us time to breathe him in, it gave us space to simply be with him and that gift is one we will never, ever forget.
Children’s hospices are not just places of medical care.
They are places of humanity, memory making, gentle holding, helping families live fully, even when life is unbearably short. What they do is beyond extraordinary it is sacred.
At Blue Bear & Co., everything we create is rooted in that experience, in love, in loss, and in the longing to hold on.
Our very first creation, the Brown Bear, was born from that place. Designed to carry a heartbeat, a voice recording, and even a scent, it offers grieving families something tangible… a little piece of their loved one to hold onto. A way to feel close, even when apart.
We know with every fibre of our being how vital that is.
This week and always, we stand shoulder to shoulder with children’s hospices across the UK. We see you. We honour you. And we thank you from the depths of our hearts for the light you bring in life’s darkest moments.
